DIY Kids Room Ideas

19 Dec 2014

Clichéd but oh so true, what you put in your kid's room, your kid puts into his or her imagination. For your kids to have an active imagination they need to be surrounded by an inspirational and stimulating environment. So when decorating your kid's room, your creative juices should be at an all time high. You don't need to have a massive budget to seriously trick out your child's room, but a dose of ingenuity and DIY should suffice. Here are some awesome decor ideas that can really add the zing to your kids room.

1) Harry Potteresque Entrance:
Custom make curtains with a brick wall pattern to mimic the magical platform from the Harry Potter series and hang it at the entrance of your child's bedroom. It will be like they're taking the magical train to Hogwarts, every time they enter the room.

2) Fairy light chandelier:
Use a broken umbrella frame and a set of multi-colored fairy lights to create a unique chandelier for your little ones room. It will feel like she has a whole ceiling full of pet fireflies lighting up her ceiling every night.

3) Scrabble wall:
Use large wood chips and paint to create scrabble tiles spelling out your child's name and mount them above their bed for a really cool board game vibe.

4) Tree storage:
Here's how you encourage your kids to be orderly. Stencil a colourful tree on one of their walls and have hooks jutting out of its branches. Keep it at a reachable height so your kids can hang their clothes and/or toys for a truly clutter free space.

5) Skateboard shelves:
Pick up some cheap skateboards from your neighbourhood sporting goods store. Paint them in funky colours and mount them on the walls for your kids to use as shelves. Simple and funky all rolled into one.

6) Locker them up:
Repurpose an old gym locker to give your kids extra space to store books, toys, CDs and other items. Simply rust proof and paint the locker in a funky colour to fit in with the theme of the rest of the room and you're sorted.

7) DIY wall safe:
Use an old medicine cabinet to create a safe for your child's private stuff. Simply paint it like a safe and add a combination lock to it. Excellent for a little mystery and secrecy that your child will both enjoy and utilise.

8) Step ladder bookcase:
Convert a small step ladder into a funky book case. Simply mount it on the wall after painting it in a funky colour and give your kids some extra storage space for their books and other important items.

9) Decorative wall hangings:
Let your imagination run wild. Use heavy duty foam to cut out zany shapes, like a soda bottle cover or a race car, paint them in funky shades and hang them on the kids room walls. Want to make it more functional, affix clothes pegs to the wall hangings to give your kids some additional wall mounted storage.

When it comes to decorating your kid's room DIY style the sky's the limit. All you need to do is spend enough time and effort getting things absolutely spot on, so that your kids room is actually his or her personalised piece of paradise.
